HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island (Taketomi Island, Okinawa Prefecture)
“A Peaceful Solo Stay for Deep Sleep on a Remote Island”
A survey of travelers found that half of them expressed a desire for a trip focused on achieving deep sleep, highlighting a growing demand for sleep-focused travel experiences. To attain the deep rest that busy daily lives often prevent, HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island offers the perfect environment. Here, you can enjoy traditional “neebui” grass (sleep grass), listen to the soothing sounds of waves, gaze at the starry sky, and immerse yourself in nature with all five senses. This 3-day, 2-night program helps restore a balanced rhythm of life, which is often disrupted by the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It offers a chance to fully embrace the rhythm of the island and enjoy restful sleep, particularly designed for solo travelers.

Feature 1: Breakfast with Tofu for a Comfortable Night’s Sleep
On the second day, breakfast includes “Island Tofu Hot Pot” made with local vegetables and tofu. Tofu is known for containing ingredients that aid in the production of hormones that support sleep. Since hormone production takes time, this hot pot is served for breakfast to support your body’s natural sleep cycle. Additionally, adding ginger and Piyashi (island pepper) helps prevent the cold, which can interfere with good sleep, allowing for a deeper night’s rest. During a busy routine, this is a rare opportunity to savor a leisurely breakfast, enjoying the tranquil pace of your holiday.

Feature 2: Relax and Unwind with Island Time
On the second day, experience a slow pace as you visit a garden where you can learn about Taketomi Island’s “nuchigusā” (*2) and other traditional crops. You will be able to hear from staff members about the island’s culture and history, without needing to worry about others, allowing for a peaceful time to connect with nature. After a leisurely lunch with “neebui tea” made from the sleep grass, enjoy a nap in the chair hammock provided in your room. Let yourself relax and enjoy the slow island time, indulging in a peaceful midday nap.
*2: “Nuchigusā” refers to herbs and medicinal plants that were used by islanders to maintain health when there were no doctors on Taketomi Island.

Feature 3: Deep Breathing to Restore Life Rhythm
In the morning, engage in a deep breathing and stretching exercise called “Yonnaa (slowly) Breathing” at Aiyaruhama Beach, just 5 minutes from HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island. This exercise, which involves breathing deeply while stretching in the morning sun, helps to wake up your body and promote relaxation. By gently tiring the body, it encourages a deeper, more restful sleep at night. In the evening, practice “Tinnuu (heavenly) Breathing” by the poolside while stargazing. This exercise, a combination of slow stretching and deep breathing, helps calm the mind and body, preparing you for a restful night’s sleep.

HOSHINOYA Tokyo: Mindful Solo Onsen Stay for a One-Night, Two-Day Escape

In recent years, the demand for solo travel has been on the rise, with hot springs ranking highly as one of the main reasons for such trips. Mindfulness, which has gained attention for its ability to reduce stress, is also becoming increasingly popular. This practice focuses on “being in the present moment, without attachment, simply feeling what is,” making it a perfect match for a peaceful retreat. Against the backdrop of the bustling city of Tokyo, we offer a special one-night, two-day solo onsen experience, where guests can unwind and fully enjoy the serenity of a traditional Japanese ryokan.

Feature 1: Relish the Ocean-Sourced Onsen in Solitude
The “Otemachi Onsen” at HOSHINOYA Tokyo is a natural hot spring that contains rich minerals from ancient seawater. The spring water, flowing up from deep underground, soothes both body and mind, providing a profound sense of relaxation. The indoor bath, designed like a cave, leads to an open-air bath where guests can enjoy the changing views of the Tokyo sky, experiencing the present moment. The onsen is available from check-in to 30 minutes before check-out, allowing guests to make the most of their stay, even during a short two-day visit in the heart of the city.

Feature 2: Refresh Body and Mind with “Sky Morning Training” at 160 Meters Above Ground
Once home to samurai estates, the Otemachi area is now a business district filled with towering skyscrapers. This activity takes place on the rooftop of a nearby high-rise building, 160 meters above ground. With no obstructing buildings or fences, guests can gaze out over the dense cityscape, with iconic landmarks such as Tokyo Skytree and Tokyo Tower visible in the distance. This invigorating morning training in the fresh air allows participants to face themselves and their surroundings from a unique perspective, providing a refreshing start to the day.

Feature 3: Balance Your Inner Self with the “Awakening Breakfast”
This traditional Japanese breakfast uses seasonal ingredients and emphasizes balance in both flavor and color, following the principles of the five tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, spicy) and five colors (red, yellow, green, white, black), as well as five cooking methods (raw, boiled, grilled, steamed, and fried). The breakfast is served in lacquered bowls, crafted by skilled artisans, engaging all the senses and gently awakening both the body and mind. It’s the perfect start to a mindful day.

Shizuoka Mirume Tea Stay at KAI Enshu https://hoshinoresorts.com/en/presscenter/05/2025/168586/ https://hoshinoresorts.com/en/presscenter/05/2025/168586/#respond Tue, 06 May 2025 07:07:49 +0000 https://cp-global-admin.hoshinoresorts.com/?p=168586 Hoshino Resorts KAI Enshu, a hot spring ryokan themed around sencha located in Kanzanji Onsen, Shizuoka Prefecture, will offer the “Shizuoka Mirume Tea Stay” from May 15 to June 30, 2025, allowing guests to thoroughly enjoy the flavors of spring in one of Japan’s leading tea-producing regions. This two-day, one-night stay during the new tea season in Shizuoka Prefecture, a well-known tea region, will provide a full experience of Shizuoka’s new tea through activities such as comparative new tea tasting, tea pairing, and “gougumi” (tea blending), where guests can blend their own tea leaves.

Background
The peak season for Shizuoka tea is May and June. Tea picked during this time is characterized by the sweetness accumulated during the harsh winter and the fresh aroma of young leaves. The refreshing aroma unique to new tea is a precious experience that can only be enjoyed for about two months after processing. This program is developed to allow guests to enjoy new tea in various forms during its peak season.

Feature 1: “Shizuoka New Tea Blending Experience” – Blend Your Own Tea Leaves
This activity involves combining tea leaves from different production areas and with varying degrees of steaming. At KAI Enshu, we offer over 20 varieties of Shizuoka’s new tea. Guests can create and taste their own original tea blends. The tea blended by the guests will be served using Moriyama ware, a type of pottery with over 500 years of history in Shizuoka, along with seasonal fresh confectionery from the local confectionery shop Ganyudo. Guests can also take their blended tea home to enjoy at their leisure.

Feature 2: Tea Pairing Course to Complement Japanese KAI Local Flavors [Power Up]During dinner, we offer a pairing course exclusive to this plan, where guests can enjoy various sencha teas, including new tea, to complement the KAI Local Flavors. This tea pairing course, featuring a combination of five types of sencha and dishes, is a delight for both the palate and the eyes.

Feature 3: Enjoy Three Types of New Tea in a Room Decorated with New Tea-Patterned Enshu Cotton Fabric
The guest room for this programme will be a Suite room with an outdoor hot spring overlooking Lake Hamana, decorated with Enshu Cotton Fabric, a local traditional craft made by Nukumori Kobo. All the fabric patterns are given unique names such as “Fuji,” “Rikyu,” and “AkiaKane,” and feature soft colors and striped patterns. Nukumori Kobo and KAI Enshu have jointly developed a “new tea” pattern that is used on cushions and bedding, evokeing a vibrant and soothing tea garden landscape. In this space, guests can enjoy tea tailored to 3 different moments of their stay: arrival, before bedtime, and upon waking.

All rooms will be transformed into KAI Signature Rooms “Hakone Gokochi (Hakone-esque) Rooms,” and two exclusive “Hakone Gokochi Suites” exceeding 110 m² will also be introduced. The KAI brand’s signature hospitality, KAI Cultural Discovery, which allows guests to experience the local traditional culture, will newly feature an experience focused on Hakone Yosegi Zaiku (Hakone Marquetry), the intricate wooden inlay work of the region. Guests will have the opportunity to engage in a part of the creation process in a newly established KAI Cultural Discovery room, gaining insight into this authentic craftsmanship. Additionally, the Sawa-chaya Tea House will open in the courtyard, offering a relaxing space with seasonal treats. The inn will be reborn as a place where guests can fully enjoy the charm of Hakone while feeling its history, including its rich nature, traditional crafts, and the culture nurtured by travelers passing along the Tokaido Road, providing a true “Hakone Gokochi” experience (meaning the feeling of being at home in Hakone).

About Hoshino Resorts KAI Hakone
Hakone Yumoto Onsen in Kanagawa Prefecture is known as the gateway to Hakone and is one of Japan’s leading hot spring areas with a history of 1200 years. It boasts numerous hot spring sources, each with different mineral compositions and health benefits. When the Tokaido Road connecting Yumoto to Hakone was established in the early Edo period (17th-19th centuries), Hakone grew into a post town, serving as a vital transportation hub. Later in this period, its abundant hot spring waters became a popular destination for travelers seeking overnight therapeutic baths (*1). Hoshino Resorts KAI Hakone is located along the historic Hakone Highway, which once led to Hakone Pass, dating back to the Edo period. Situated facing the Sukumo River and surrounded by nature, it offers views of Mt. Yuzaka, the source of its natural hot springs. The concept of the inn is “A hot spring retreat offering the Hakone Gokochi (Hakone-esque) experience, immersed in the history of the Tokaido Road.”  Throughout the inn, the design and hospitality evoke the spirit of the travelers who once journeyed along this important route. By bathing in the historic and famous hot springs and being soothed by the changing seasons, while contemplating the travelers who contributed to Hakone’s development, guests will discover the deep history and traditions of Hakone during their stay.

Renewal Highlights of Hoshino Resorts KAI Hakone

1. Guest Rooms

■ All Rooms to Become KAI Signature Rooms “”Hakone Gokochi (Hakone-esque) Rooms”
“KAI” offers KAI Signature Rooms where guests can experience the local culture. With this renewal, all rooms will become KAI Signature Rooms, designed to capture the essence of Hakone. The redesigned guest rooms newly incorporate artistic representations of travel items that past travelers would have used at inns, featured in the wall art and bed coverings.KAI Signature Room “Hakone Gokochi Room”View from the guest room

The walls of the living rooms feature artwork inspired by the “sandogasa” (a wide, cone-shaped hat worn by travelers) and “hikimawashi kappa” (a type of raincoat), essential items for those traveling long distances on foot to protect them from sun and rain. The bed coverings showcase an original design incorporating travel necessities like “waraji” (straw sandals) and “chochin” (paper lanterns) that travelers carried. All guest rooms offer views of Mt. Yuzaka and the clear Sukumo River, allowing guests to reflect on the journeys of past travelers while listening to the gentle sound of the river.Artwork featuring “sandogasa” and “hikimawashi kappa”

■ Luxurious Suite Room Exceeding 110 m² “Hakone Gokochi Suite”
The living area of this suite is divided into a desk space and a lower, sunken sofa area, providing different perspectives and distances from which to enjoy the scenery of Mt. Yuzaka. Guests can also enjoy the seasonal views from the Outdoor hot spring in the guest room, and adjacent to it is a Yuagari lounge called the “Ishi-no-ma Room,” complete with a small garden for unwinding after bathing. The suite includes two separate bedrooms and can accommodate up to four guests. By thoughtfully arranging the living spaces, it naturally encourages both shared time together and individual relaxation, making it ideal for family trips with adult children or parents, allowing adults to enjoy each other’s company while maintaining a comfortable sense of personal space.Living room of the “Hakone Gokochi Suite” (Image)Outdoor hot spring and Yuagari lounge “Ishi-no-ma Room” (Image)

2. KAI Cultural Discovery: Experiencing the Art of Hakone Marquetry in a Dedicated Workshop-like Space
Since its opening in 2012, Hoshino Resorts KAI Hakone has collaborated with craftsmen from the “Tsuyuki Woodcraft” workshop, introducing guests to the history and origins of Hakone Yosegi Zaiku (Hakone Marquetry), the intricate wooden inlay work of the Hakone region. The new KAI Cultural Discovery will offer guests the chance to experience a part of the actual creation process of this beautiful craft. While learning about how raw wood is transformed into finished marquetry, guests will work with carefully assembled pieces of wood, called “seed wood,” which create various patterns. Using a traditional plane, they will shave thin layers from this “seed wood” to reveal the delicate designs. These shaved pieces can then be made into a photo frame to take home. Furthermore, the space dedicated to this activity is designed to resemble a craftsman’s workshop, with unprocessed logs used as wall decorations. A shop featuring Hakone marquetry works will be located next to the workshop, allowing guests to fully appreciate the origins and artistry of this local craft, from the raw materials to the finished pieces.Image of working with “seed wood”Thin layers are shaved from the “seed wood” to reveal the marquetry patterns.

3. Public Space: The “Sawa-chaya Tea House,” a Relaxing Hub for Guests
The “Sawa-chaya Tea House,” which will open in the courtyard, is a relaxing space inspired by the teahouses that once lined the Hakone Road, a historically challenging part of the Tokaido Road where travelers sought rest. The name “Sawa Chaya” has multiple meanings: “sawa” referring to the ravine of the Sukumo River where the inn is located, “sawasawa” representing the sound of trees swaying in the lush courtyard, and “sawa” (meaning “tea gathering”) representing the moments of conversation that naturally arise while enjoying tea. It embodies the desire for guests to strengthen their connections with loved ones, just as travelers once connected at teahouses. Upon arrival, staff will serve tea and Japanese sweets as hosts of the tea house, and after dinner, herbal tea and sake will be available. It is designed as a welcoming space that guests will want to visit repeatedly, whether for a moment of relaxation after bathing or a brief rest before departing.“Sawa-chaya Tea House” where guests can relax with tea (Image)

Hoshino Resorts’ hot spring ryokan brand “KAI” has decided to open its 24th property in Kusatsu Onsen, Gunma Prefecture. The facility will be named KAI Kusatsu, and its opening is scheduled for the spring of 2026. This will be the first KAI brand property in Gunma Prefecture and the second property for Hoshino Resorts in the area. The concept is “A forest hot spring inn and onsen town connected by a tunnel.” Located on a hill overlooking Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane, the expansive and nature-rich grounds will house multiple buildings, including guest room wings, a bathhouse building, and a lounge building. It will feature a private tunnel exclusively for guests, providing access to the Kusatsu Onsen town. This will offer a stay where guests can enjoy the contrasting atmospheres of KAI Kusatsu, surrounded by nature, and the historic and vibrant Kusatsu Onsen town.

About KAI Kusatsu
KAI Kusatsu is a new property situated on a hill with views of Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane, a well-known symbol of the Kusatsu area. The concept aims to blend the tranquility of a nature-rich retreat with the vibrant atmosphere of the local hot spring town. The hotel grounds are extensive and feature a courtyard and several buildings. A key feature is a private passage for guests that provides easy access to the Kusatsu Onsen town. This unique connection allows guests to experience both the peaceful, natural surroundings of KAI Kusatsu and the lively, historical streets of the onsen town. The goal is to offer a stay where guests can appreciate the diverse attractions of the Kusatsu region through these two distinct environments.

About Kusatsu Onsen
Kusatsu Onsen is one of Japan’s three most famous hot springs and is one of the leading onsen destinations in the country. It boasts a long history, said to have been discovered as early as the Kofun period (approx. 3rd to 6th centuries AD), and has long been cherished as a therapeutic bathing site. Located at the foot of Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane, it benefits from the mountain’s bounty, with a natural hot spring discharge volume of over 32,000 liters per minute, boasting the highest natural discharge volume in Japan (*1). The culture born from the hot springs, such as the steaming Yubatake, the traditional “Yumomi” stirring of the hot spring water, and the communal baths beloved by locals, has taken root, attracting many visitors throughout the year.

Hoshino Resorts Launches New Brand “LUCY” : A Mountain Hotel Providing Peak Comfort for Peak Adventures https://hoshinoresorts.com/en/news/04/2025/171487/ https://hoshinoresorts.com/en/news/04/2025/171487/#respond Tue, 22 Apr 2025 07:52:12 +0000 https://cp-global-admin.hoshinoresorts.com/?p=171487
Hoshino Resorts (Headquarters: Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture / CEO: Yoshiharu Hoshino) has officially announced the launch of “LUCY,” its sixth brand following HOSHINOYA, RISONARE, KAI, OMO, and BEB. LUCY, a mountain hotel providing peak comfort for peak adventures, will begin rolling out nationwide starting in the spring of 2025. Through hotel operations in mountainous locations, LUCY aims to make the heat-stirring experiences unique to the mountains – ever-changing scenery and encounters of starry skies and wildlife beyond imagination – more accessible to a wider audience, thereby proposing a new style of travel.

Background of the Launch
Japan is known as a country skilled in cultural tourism. While the market scale continues to grow annually, the inbound tourism market, which is attracting significant attention, sees approximately three-quarters of its activity concentrated in the major cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hokkaido, and Fukuoka (*1). However, with 35 national parks (as of June 25, 2024) and a rich natural environment, it is crucial for Japan to strengthen “nature tourism” moving forward. In line with this, the Ministry of the Environment announced a project in 2016 initiating efforts to enhance facilities and services within national parks.

Furthermore, in the realm of “mountains,” a key aspect of nature tourism, Japan boasts a very rich history and culture, from unique mountain worship and enjoying the changing seasons to the modern leisure activity of “mountain climbing.” Japanese mountain huts are, in fact, already established as a type of accommodation in nature tourism, numbering as many as 361 (*2). As a first step, with the goal of improving the comfort of lodging functions in these mountain huts, Hoshino Resorts has decided to launch “LUCY,” a new brand specializing in “mountain tourism” within the broader category of nature tourism. We aim to make the mountains a destination for everyone.

LUCY’s Concept
With the desire to make mountain stays more accessible to a wider audience, LUCY aims to provide a “comfortable lodging experience” that has been considered difficult to achieve in mountain environments. To this end, the brand defines its facility category as “mountain hotels” and has established brand promises regarding functionality:

6 Promises for a Comfortable Mountain Getaway
1. Private rooms
2. Warm water bidet toilets
3. Shower & powder room
4. Nourishing meals with meat, fish, and eggs
5. Convenient shop for provisions inside the hotel
6. Unlimited charging & Wi-Fi

Mountains offer numerous unforgettable moments, such as ever-shifting landscape, unprecedented starry skies, and encounters with flora and fauna. With the goal of providing facilities and services that make these moments even more special and memorable as heart-stirring experiences, the brand concept has been set as a mountain hotel providing “peak comfort for peak adventures.”

Origin of the Brand Name “LUCY”
The brand name “LUCY” is inspired by Isabella Lucy Bird (1831 – 1904), the renowned 19th-century English explorer, writer, photographer, and naturalist who ventured through Japan. Bird landed in Japan in 1878, shortly after it ended its isolation policy and shifted towards opening its doors to the world. She is said to be the first Westerner to traverse Japan from Hokkaido to the Kansai region, starting from Tokyo. Her interest and curiosity in travel and Japan and spirit of venturing into the unknown resonate with our desire to become a catalyst for more people to embark on such new travel experience. Therefore, her middle name was chosen as the brand name.

About the Logo
The mark, which gently encloses a woman gazing at the mountains, expresses LUCY’s concept of supporting the heart-stirring experiences encountered in the mountains with comfort and hospitality.

Future Developments
As the first LUCY brand property, LUCY Ozehatomachi by Hoshino Resorts will open on September 1, 2025, at Hatomachi Pass, the entrance to Oze National Park located in Katashina Village, Gunma Prefecture. Future developments are planned in several other mountain tourism destinations, including the famous Tateyama area, Toyama Prefecture.

From Japan to the World: HOSHINOYA’s Global Ambition

Adopting the “Meyui-mon” for the New Brand Logo

With a commitment to providing deeply imagined and deeply immersive stays where every moment feels special, Japanese brand HOSHINOYA unveils a new logo on April 22nd, 2025. The updated emblem incorporates the “Meyui-mon,” a traditional family crest that evokes the tie-dyeing process, symbolizing the brand’s aspiration to “connect people worldwide through the experience of travel.”

Background of the Brand Logo Renewal
Founded in 1914 as Hoshino Onsen Ryokan in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, HOSHINOYA now operates six properties in Japan and two internationally. To better understand global perceptions of our brand as we aim to become a leading international hotel group originating in Japan, we surveyed people overseas about our logo. When asked which country came to mind when viewing our logos, approximately 80% identified the “HOSHINOYA” lettering as Japanese. In contrast, our traditional crescent moon and star crest (Tsuki-hoshi-mon) was most frequently associated with the Middle East outside Japan, with China and India being the next most common responses, together representing about half of the feedback. This indicated a broad range of international associations for our existing logo. Consequently, based on this research, we are renewing our brand logo to further develop as a Japanese hotel operator.

Responses to the Question: “Looking at the following logos, please select the country name that best comes to mind for each logo.”

Survey Overview
Survey Name: HOSHINOYA Brand Logo Survey
Date of Survey: June 2021
Target Respondents: Americans, British, French, and Australians aged 20 and over
Survey Method: Multiple-choice and open-ended online questionnaire
Number of Respondents: 600 (479 respondents answered the relevant questions)
Survey Company: Neo Marketing Co., Ltd.

Concept of the New Brand Logo

Left: Previous Logo, Right: New Logo

Japan boasts approximately 30,000 family crests, each interwoven with unique histories and stories (*1), and they are often seen as iconic examples of Japanese design. Our new symbol mark is the “Meyui-mon,” a design that visually represents tie-dyeing. A prime example of this technique is Kanoko Shibori (fawn-spotted tie-dyeing), where fabric is bound with thread to create patterns featuring “eyes” – the areas left undyed and white. The Meyui-mon gets its name from the connected or tied arrangement of these eye-like shapes.

Japan’s subtle appreciation for the changing seasons and the diverse cultures found across its regions are essential to our philosophy. As a Japanese hotel brand, we carefully integrate the local climate, history, and culture into the experiences we offer, aiming to create unforgettable moments unique to each season you visit. Moreover, we aspire to connect people globally through travel that fosters interaction between our guests and local communities and staff, allowing for a deeper understanding of each destination’s unique appeal. This desire to “connect” deeply resonates with us, which is why we incorporated the Meyui-mon into our logo design. Having celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2025, HOSHINOYA remains committed to promoting travel, both within Japan and internationally, that bridges connections between people worldwide.

OMO, a city tourism hotel brand, will open OMO7 Yokohama by Hoshino Resorts (hereinafter OMO7 Yokohama) in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, in the spring of 2026. The hotel is part of a development project called “BASEGATE Yokohama Kannai (Yokohama City Former City Hall Block Utilization Project),” which utilizes the former Yokohama City Hall site in front of JR Kannai Station. The former Yokohama City Hall, designed by Togo Murano, a leading architect of the Showa era who supported Japan’s modern architecture, will be utilized as a “legacy hotel.” The hotel’s design partially incorporates or reinterprets the design of the former Yokohama City Hall. Reservations will begin on the official website in October 2025.

About “BASEGATE Yokohama Kannai”
BASEGATE Yokohama Kannai is a large-scale mixed-use (*1) project being developed by eight companies, with Mitsui Fudosan as the representative company, on the site of the former Yokohama City Hall in front of JR “Kannai” Station. Characterized by a “fusion of old and new,” the project aims to preserve and utilize the former City Hall administrative building to inherit Yokohama’s culture and create a dignified cityscape, while also establishing a hub for entertainment and innovation that symbolizes the next generation of Yokohama.BASEGATE Yokohama Kannai Rendering

About the Former Yokohama City Hall
The former Yokohama City Hall was completed in 1959 (Showa 34) as a commemorative project for the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Port of Yokohama and supported Yokohama’s municipal administration for over 60 years. The administrative building was designed by Togo Murano, a leading architect of the Showa era who supported Japan’s modern architecture. Many citizens gathered at the final public viewing of the former City Hall in December 2020, expressing their regret at its closure (*2).

Former Yokohama City Hall Administrative Building

About “Legacy Hotel”
To preserve the familiar cityscape of the former City Hall, we have chosen the theme of a “legacy hotel,” which involves retaining the administrative building in its current location and utilizing it as a hotel that generates tourism and vibrancy. We will preserve as much of the building’s design as possible, and for parts that must be demolished due to deterioration, we will reinterpret them to create a design suitable for a new hotel, rather than simply copying the old. Our aim is to create a hotel that inherits the memories and scenery that symbolize the history of Yokohama’s development.

Examples of Directly Inheriting the Design of the Former City Hall

Inside the former City Hall, there is a Taizan tile art piece (titled “Sea, Waves, Ship”) by Shindo Tsuji, a sculptor who had connections with Mr. Murano. This will be retained as a wall feature in the café after renovation. Additionally, Mr. Murano is said to have displayed rich expression in the design of stair railings, earning him the reputation of being a “master of handrails” (*3). The grand staircase used in the former City Hall’s civic hall will be relocated and reconstructed in the hotel’s atrium, and parts of its smooth curved handrails will also be reused.

Examples of Reinterpreting the Design of the Former City Hall
In the first-floor lobby, which is visible to many people, special lighting incorporating elements of the circular lighting from the former assembly hall will be installed. The way the light leaks and the materials used for the lighting will be newly designed to create an uplifting atmosphere suitable for a hotel entrance. Furthermore, the colors used in the hotel’s guest rooms and public areas will be inspired by the colors of tiles, furniture, and carpets used in the former City Hall.

Exhibition Space Related to Architecture and Yokohama’s History
An exhibition related to the architecture is also planned. While staying at the hotel, guests will be able to trace the history of how the building was cherished and how Yokohama developed.

A Hotel to Rediscover “Yokohama,” Where Overseas and Japanese Culture, History and Novelty Intersect
Since its opening in 1859, Yokohama has been a place where overseas and Japanese cultures have met and developed. Even today, one can feel the exotic atmosphere in Yokohama Chinatown and the Western-style buildings built from the Meiji to the Taisho periods. Another attraction is the ability to experience both the deep downtown areas that have continued since the post-war period and modern tourist spots. The Noge and Isezakicho areas are lined with long-established restaurants and bars, where locals, known as “Hamakko,” still gather. On the other hand, the recently developed waterfront “Bay Area” and Yokohama Stadium are classic tourist spots visited by many people. Our hotel is located in the middle of the Noge/Isezakicho area and the Bay Area, making it the perfect base for experiencing Yokohama’s diverse attractions. At our hotel, we will offer the “Go-KINJO” service to help guests enjoy their stay in Yokohama more deeply, providing “OMO Rangers,” neighborhood guides who know the city inside out, and a “Go-KINJO Map” that gathers deep local attractions not found in guidebooks. Additionally, the public space “OMO Base” within the hotel will offer a playful space full of ideas to make exploring the city fun, where guests can research recommended spots before strolling, take a break during their walk, and more.
