First issued in 1937, it has become one of the leading international travel magazines with over 8.1 million readers. Drawing on Travel + Leisure 2020 World\u2019s Best Awards readers\u2019 survey results, Travel + Leisure recognizes the best\u00a0hotels around the globe by naming them to this year\u2019s T+L 500 list. The hotels are listed alphabetically, by region. Readers rated hotels on the following characteristics: rooms\/facilities, location, service, food, value. HOSHINOYA Tokyo opened in July of 2016 at Otemachi, a financial district located in the heart of Tokyo. With two basement floors and 17 floors above ground, it is a \u201ctower of ryokan (Japanese style inn)\u201d. It is common for traditional ryokans to be a single-story building and to be located outside the city but here, each floor of 6 rooms represents a small ryokan and it is piled up to create a \u201ctower of ryokan\u201d in an urban setting. The interior is furnished with <em>tatami<\/em> (mat of woven straw) and can only be entered after taking off the shoes at the main entrance. Whilst keeping the comfort of modern life, guest rooms incorporate essences from Japanese traditional lifestyles, which include the use of <em>tatami<\/em>, <em>shoji<\/em> (paper doors), furniture made with bamboo and chestnut wood.
