[2025 Edition] Walking along Furano's Lavender Road

Lavender is Hokkaido's summer flower. The flower fields scattered around the Furano area are spectacular, and the scenery has captivated many people.
There are four main varieties of lavender: "Yotei," "Hanamoiwa," "Noushihayasaki," and "Okamurasaki," which have different flowering times, colors, and fragrances. The four areas of Furano (Furano City, Kamifurano Town, Nakafurano Town, and Minamifurano Town) are decorated with the four types of lavender, and each has its own unique character, so we recommend comparing the unique and spectacular views.

Farm Tomita made Furano's lavender known nationwide. During the flowering season from late June to mid-August, you'll be enveloped in the soft scent of lavender. Its origins lie in the "Traditional Lavender Fields." When cultivation began in the early Showa period, the lavender was shipped as a fragrant crop, and even today the farm houses a lavender oil distillery and a perfume blending room. In late July, you can see the dynamic harvesting scene with harvesters at "Lavender East," a field used for fragrant crops.

Out-of-season lavender and flower fields that bloom all year round

The lavender season is very short, but the greenhouse "Green House" grows lavender even outside of summer so that it can be enjoyed all year round. We also recommend the photo gallery "Gallery Fleur," which displays photos of lavender fields throughout the seasons. You can also enjoy the flower fields where many different kinds of flowers bloom in relays until mid-October.
In the garden, you can enjoy a variety of dishes made with lavender and locally produced ingredients, but the highlight is Farm Tomita's original "Freshly Baked Furano Melon Bread." The crispy crust and thick cream made with Furano melon juice are delicious, and you'll want to eat it again and again.

There are several shops and cafes in the garden, so you can enjoy a stroll around the shops while touring the flower fields. Farm Tomita's mascot, "Labe-san," is also adorable!

In addition to the four varieties of lavender, the foothills are planted with marigolds, salvia, cockscomb, sunflowers, kochia, peonies, lupines, and ash trees, creating a colorful landscape. The landmark is the floral letters "Nakafurano" near the peak. It can also be seen from National Route 237 (Furano National Route).

Rokugo Observatory, located on the grounds of Furano Jam Garden, is 500 meters above sea level. It is a viewpoint of flowers and scenery with a cool breeze passing through. Lavender blooms about one week later than on the plains. The best time to see it is usually from mid-July to around August 10th. Here you can quietly enjoy the slowly approaching summer.

Lavender fields at Kanno Farm
Lavender fields at Kanno Farm

Kanno Farm is located at Mibaushi Pass along National Route 237 (Furano National Route), which connects Furano and Biei. The lavender blooms about a week later than in the city, and is usually at its best in late July. Several varieties of lavender, including Nomurasaki Hayazaki, Okamurasaki, and Lavender Grosso, paint the grounds purple. The flower fields that can be seen from the top of the hill and the view from the rest area at the bottom of the hill are both magnificent. The endless, majestic scenery gives a real Hokkaido feel.

At Kanno Farm, a farm on a hill, the flowers are always in full bloom until mid-October. There are dozens of different kinds of flowers to enjoy. What catches your eye are the flower fields, where orange and yellow marigolds and white, purple and red salvia are boldly and beautifully planted. Among the flower fields, the flowers of vegetables such as potatoes and pumpkins also make their presence felt. The vegetables harvested here can be enjoyed at Kinkonkanno, a shop within the farm, in the form of corn soup, fried potatoes and buttered potatoes. Beautiful lavender fields on a hill
Beautiful lavender fields on a hill

Flower Land Kamifurano is located on a hill just off the national highway that connects Furano and Asahikawa. Beyond the lavender blooming all over the slopes is the Tokachi mountain range. At the base of the mountain, a typical Hokkaido rural landscape spreads out. We also recommend trying your hand at making things using lavender in the Experience workshop. There are a variety of activities that you can easily participate in, such as the "Good Sleep Cotton Pillow" (time required: about 10 minutes, 1,000 yen per person), where you can make a pillow with a gentle fragrance that has a relaxing effect using potpourri.

As the name "Flower Land" suggests, a variety of flowers are in full bloom here. After the lavender blooms, the season for marigolds, salvia, and celosia begins in autumn. You can tour the gorgeous flower fields on a tractor-pulled sightseeing bus (fees apply). After enjoying the scenery, try the Furano melons and corn, which are in season until around the end of September.
