The UNKAI Terrace opened in 2006 inside Hoshino Resorts Tomamu. Since its opening, it has been visited by over 1.78 million tourists, making it one of Hokkaido's most popular scenic spots. It is only open in the early mornings from May to October, when the sea of clouds is most likely to form, and there is about a 40% chance of the sea of clouds appearing during that period. Many people visit the Unkai Terrace in search of the magnificent sea of clouds that appears after a 13-minute ride on the Unkai Gondola on the premises. Here are some highlights of UNKAI Terrace.
UNKAI Terrace and a unique observation spot
The 3-story observation deck "UNKAI Terrace"

This observation deck, which juts out into the air, was renovated and reopened in 2021. The 12-meter-high, three-story observation deck has a first floor that juts out into the air, and standing at the tip of the deck, you can feel as if you are on a boat sailing out into the sea of clouds. The second floor is a sofa space where you can relax and enjoy the spectacular view. From the top floor, you can enjoy a wide view of the spectacular natural scenery, including the sea of clouds stretching into the distance, the Hidaka Mountains, and the morning sun rising between the mountains.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy the sea of clouds to the fullest

There are six unique decks along the mountain path. The "Cloud Pool" is a cloud-shaped, three-dimensional deck with a hammock-like net stretched across it, allowing you to rest your body on it and feel as if you are floating above the clouds. The "Cloud Walk" is a suspension bridge jutting out from the mountain slope, allowing you to enjoy the thrill of walking on clouds. It creates a special Experience that you can only experience here, as if you were playing in a cloud theme park.
More unique observation spots

Other observation spots are also full of ideas. There are various styles of observation, such as the "Cloud Bed," where you can lean back on large and small cushions resembling cloud particles and relax while enjoying the view, the "Contour Bench," a 117m-long bench built on the slope of the mountain where you can enjoy the view from any height and angle, and the "Sky Wedge," an observation deck resembling the bow of a ship cutting through the sea of clouds, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view. At the "Cloud Bar," you can sit on a chair higher than the trees covering the slope and enjoy a bird's-eye view.
Cloud Cafe: Enjoy a spectacular view
Take a break while watching the sea of clouds

The mystical sight of lush green mountains stretching out in the distance and the clouds that change and flow with the wind from moment to moment, seen from an altitude of 1,088m, is something you never tire of. The "UNKAI Terrace" was started by the ski resort Staff/staff member maintained the gondolas in the summer, who wanted Guest/customer to see the sea of clouds that they saw every day. The "Cloud Cafe" is located inside the "UNKAI Terrace", just after you get off the gondola, so you can easily visit.
An original menu focused on clouds

The menu is full of originality and impact, and you can enjoy sweets and drinks inspired by clouds. The most recommended item is the "Cloud Soft Serve." It is presented in a voluminous manner to resemble fluffy clouds, and is also very photogenic.
The "Unkai Au Lait" is a two-layer drink made of milk and butterfly pea tea, reminiscent of the blue sky and white sea of clouds, and is a visual treat. Enjoy a special morning with a delicious drink and a spectacular view.
Climbing Mount Tomamu: Experience a sense of unity with nature
Take on an early morning trekking trip of 40 minutes each way

When the area around the "Sea of Clouds Gondola Summit Station" is covered in white clouds, why not try climbing Mt. Tomamu? The difference in altitude from the "Gondola Summit Station" to the summit of Mt. Tomamu is only 150m, but the clouds sometimes part near the summit, creating a sea of clouds.
After submitting the mountain entry form at the trailhead, you will climb the zigzag slope to the summit, from which you can see Mount Furano and Mount Tokachi, and if you're lucky, you can see a 360-degree sea of clouds.
Feel the soothing effects of the magnificent scenery and the pretty flowers at your feet

Mt. Tomamu has an elevation of 1,239m. Although it is not a particularly high mountain, the area near the summit is in a harsh environment known as the "tree line," where no trees can grow, making it a great spot for observing alpine plants after a short hike. The best part of this hike is not only the beautiful scenery in the distance, but also finding the small flowers that live tough in the harsh environment.
The path is narrow and you may have to walk on rocky surfaces, so please wear comfortable shoes. Also, the temperature at the summit will be low, so be sure to bring a jacket to enjoy the hike safely.

"Sea of Clouds Guide" that reveals the mysteries of the sea of clouds
An easy-to-understand explanation of how the sea of clouds occurs
.jpg)
The sea of clouds that occurs in Tomamu is a mysterious natural phenomenon that is created when many conditions come together, including the special topography, weather, temperature, humidity, wind direction, etc. The "UNKAI Terrace" is a rare place where you can see three different types of sea of clouds: the "Pacific Ocean Sea of Clouds," where clouds born in the Pacific Ocean flow dynamically, the "Tomamu Sea of Clouds," which is created by radiation cooling, and the "Bad Weather Sea of Clouds," which occurs when the weather is bad.
The scenery will look different when you listen to the "sea of clouds guide" who will clearly explain the mechanism of the sea of clouds and the conditions of the day.
